An engagement session in Downtown Honolulu is always a dream—historic architecture, hidden alleyways, neon lights, and an effortless mix of old and new. But when Wellington and Safiya envisioned their session, they weren’t just looking for a beautiful backdrop. They wanted something that felt like them—a reflection of their relationship, their love for Honolulu’s Chinatown, and a nod to vintage Hong Kong pre-wedding photography, where modern love meets old-world charm.
Their session was equal parts cinematic, stylish, and nostalgic, blending the energy of 1980s glam with the grit and soul of Chinatown. We wandered through narrow streets lined with red lanterns, neon-lit shop signs, and the patina of time-worn facades, capturing moments that felt effortlessly editorial yet deeply personal.
Whether you’re planning your own engagement session in Downtown Honolulu or simply love stories told through bold, timeless imagery, this session is proof that inspiration can come from the past and still feel incredibly fresh.
Every great engagement session starts with a story, and Wellington and Safiya’s is no exception.
Wellington and Safiya met online at the end of the first year of the pandemic while living in Washington, D.C. In true 2020 fashion, their first date was outdoors—at a ramen restaurant in the Shaw neighborhood. The connection was instant, and soon, they were inseparable.
These days, you can still find them at ramen restaurants in Honolulu, a quiet nod to where it all began.
S: I liked his fish tattoo. I thought he was funny and charismatic.
W: “I will break through this tough exterior, even if it costs me my life.”
That mix of charm and humor? It’s exactly what made this session so effortlessly fun to capture.
Honolulu’s Chinatown is one of the oldest in the United States, dating back to the 1800s when Chinese immigrants arrived to work on sugar plantations. Over the decades, it has evolved into a neighborhood layered with history, grit, and reinvention—from its past as a red-light district in the early 1900s to its present-day reputation as a hub for art, food, and culture.
Walking through Maunakea Street or Hotel Street, you’ll find century-old buildings with faded murals, dim sum spots that have been there for decades, and modern cocktail bars tucked behind unmarked doors. It’s this tension between past and present that makes Chinatown an incredible place for a stylish engagement session in Honolulu.
For Wellington and Safiya, Chinatown wasn’t just a beautiful setting. It was a place they had come to love.
S: We wanted to do something that echoed the Chinatown neighborhood we have grown to love. Chinatown is funky, it is old, and it is new. We find the diverse eras of architecture to be fascinating.
Inspired by vintage Hong Kong pre-wedding photography, they wanted something that felt both cinematic and personal. Instead of the traditional beachside engagement session, they opted for an urban love story, filled with neon reflections, textured city walls, and stylish nods to 1980s glam.
S: As far as vibe—I wanted to communicate an authentic feeling of our lived experience in love, while keeping it artsy and unique (like us!).
And that’s exactly what we created.
To bring their Hong Kong-inspired vision to life, we leaned into bold colors, cinematic lighting, and a mix of formal and street-style moments. Think sleek, tailored fashion against raw city textures, glowing neon storefronts reflecting off wet pavement, and intimate glances exchanged in the middle of bustling streets.
Wellington and Safiya fully committed to their 80s glam aesthetic with:
The contrast of elevated fashion against Chinatown’s raw, everyday beauty made the session feel like a scene from a Wong Kar-wai film—moody, intimate, and brimming with chemistry.
We explored Chinatown’s hidden corners, neon storefronts, and vintage signage, capturing moments that felt both candid and editorial. Some highlights:
Every shot was a blend of modern romance and vintage nostalgia—exactly the balance Wellington and Safiya wanted.
For couples looking for an engagement session in Downtown Honolulu, Chinatown offers something completely different from the usual beachfront session.
Architectural diversity – A mix of historic buildings, textured walls, and neon signs
A cinematic feel – The energy of a city in motion, with dramatic lighting opportunities
A rich cultural backdrop – Layers of history, from classic dim sum restaurants to contemporary art galleries
If you love fashion-forward editorial photos, cinematic moments, and a mix of grit and glam, this is your place.
As the session wrapped up, we talked about what’s ahead.
What are you looking forward to for the wedding?
We’re both looking forward to seeing all of our friends and family, and having a great time with everyone. We want to share some of what we think makes Honolulu so great!
S: I’m so excited to wear my wedding dress and see how everything comes together.
And if their wedding day is anything like this session—bold, stylish, and undeniably them—it’s going to be unforgettable.
